Tourism Against Tradition

Recently, news broke out about a stunt at one of the UNESCO World Heritage site here in the Philippines. It is said that foreigners were wakeskating (similar to wakeboarding) at the Banaue Rice Terraces and many netizens did not like this especially the conservative ones. Personally, I do not see anything bad about it since it is promoting the heritage site and doing its best to appeal to the tourists. However, one must also see it in the point of these netizens… I do understand why people do not like what happen because the site is being exploited for the sake of tourism so that they can earn more money. I think if the money is going to be used to improve the site for the tourists and the people living in that area to appreciate the beauty even more, then it is not a bad idea to promote the site but the problem is the way they promote it. The way they promoted the site is very interacting to the point that the viewers do want to go to Rice Terraces but the problem is one cannot expect to be allowed to wakeskate at the rice terraces after all it is a World Heritage Site.

I think the Department of Tourism in CAR have neglected that the site is something worth appreciating and the same goes for the culture and tradition of the residents. Even if they say that they made sure that no wildlife animals and plants got damaged or disturbed, it does not prove what they have done because there is this part of me where I cannot help but think that they might be just saying that in order to reassure us that the project is not bad for the environment. It can be a way for the organizers of the project to just control the negative uproar they are receiving. It is also reported that they have talked to the residents about this “stunt” but the question of whether they actually did talk to the residents is something I do not completely believe in. Another question is whether the organizers of the project have promise the local residents something in return if the people do agree with what they want.

I have always like the Machiavelle’s statement “the end does not justify the means” and I do think that this statement fits perfectly well in this situation because whatever they organizers have planned and wanted to do does not really make what they did good. If they wanted to improve the economic conditions of the local residents, then they could have found another way where they do not need to go against the tradition and culture of the locals. On the other hand, I do understand why they do something like this because wakeskating is very modern thus it diverts from tradition but the thing is sometimes preserving the tradition and culture is more important than modernizing the tradition and culture of the locals. Wakeskating might be popular now but the thing is the shelf life of the tradition and culture of the locals have been there for a long time already, perhaps longer than any of us can imagine. Besides, preserving the environment is important and I appreciate the organizers’ assurance but the fact is I am still doubtful of whether it is the truth or not.

One of the reason that people would want to go to Banaue rice terraces is because of its beauty and there are many reasons for people to go to the rice terraces thus wakeskating at the heritage site is quite useless since, in a way, it is misleading in the sense that we would not be allowed to do exactly what is in the promotional video. One must learn to appreciate it the way that it is because the Banaue Rice Terraces is magnificent in its own and it is priceless.

I would like to apologize that my “Work Cited” list is only links! I am now in Baguio and will be home on November 3. I brought my homework with me like I always do but it is quite hard since I can hardly get an internet connection because my Globe Tattoo can barely pick-up a decent signal so I have to do this post really fast.

Players as Commodities

Teng Brothers during UAAP Men’s Basketball Game

Teng Brothers

In extension to what my two classmates have discussed in their blogs and what we discussed in our Popular Culture class, I am going to discuss how players become commodities. Right now, I see both Teng brothers as products especially during the UAAP Men’s Basketball hype because they became “the face” of the UAAP Men’s Basketball championship game. Jeron and Jeric Teng were interviewed before every game. Every time my family watched the interview before every game we thought that it is a publicity stunt, especially when it got to Game 3. No offense! I do love that fact that we won the championship game against UST but there is a part of me that cannot help but think that perhaps the reason it got to Game 3 is because of publicity stunt since the people involve share the profit (not that I do not think that our basketball team is good).

Currently, everyone has their eyes on Benjie Paras’s son, Kobe Paras, who just won the FIBA 3×3 U18 World Championship dunk contest. In many of Kobe Paras’s interview, he says that he is thinking about entering show business at one point just like his father. I already see him as a commodity what more if he enters showbiz like his father. Thus, I raised the question: Why do players become commodities? I think players become commodities because they need to gain sponsors at one part but also they are used as a marketing tool since many people see them as an inspiration, especially by the younger generations who aspires to become like them someday.

It should also be noted that basketball players are not the only ones seen as commodities but rather all players of different sports such as Phil and James Younghusband. When they started to make a name for themselves, both brothers became the face for Collezione C2 (a Filipino clothing store). Currently, they are featured in commercials for Clear, Century Tuna, and Kenny Rogers to name a few. I think the best example of player I can think of that has become a commodity is Chris Tiu since after making a name for himself in the basketball court, he also made a name for himself in showbiz because of that he is now a commodity for many brands such as Smart and Milo.

Younghusband Brothers for Clear Dream Match

I guess what I am trying to say is it is natural for players to become commodities whether they know it or not because it is part of the sports world. I mean I do not think players can make a name and attract sponsors if they cannot make themselves into a commodity that a company or coöperation is  willing to invest in and used as a marketing tool because it is important for players to become a product that many people can relate and use as inspirations since they need to sell tickets.

Miley is Hot on the Market

*Apologizing for the images and the video because they might be disturbing*

Everyone that watched the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) 2013 remembers the performance by Miley Cyrus. I think even those people who did not watch the VMAs know or at least have an idea of what Miley Cyrus did. It could be said that everyone who watched Miley Cyrus’ performance was left with awe and surely not the good kind because it was quite disturbing. It was really disturbing to the point that I would not look at foam fingers and teddy bears the same way ever again. Thus, I raised the question what happen to Miley? *Seriously, what happen to her?*

Miley Cyrus’s MTV VMAs 2013 Performance

Miley Cyrus’s MTV VMAs 2013 Performance

I think Miley Cyrus’ self-life disappeared for a certain time when her Hannah Montana days ended but I assure you she is back on the market this year and it is all thanks to her MTV VMAs performance. Why? The answer is quite simple after analyzing her actions. She made a comeback when she performed in what many people call as “provocative” or “raunchy” because she is now hot on the eyes of everyone since she did something that is completely unexpected by everyone. I mean she made such a memorable performance where it leads everyone to watch her every move to the point that everyone asks: what is she going to do next? *Thinks hard*

Miley Cyrus then and now

She also made sure for everyone to see that she is no longer the innocent Disney star she used to be. After all, it is better to have any kind of publicity than nothing at all. Just like what Britney Spears said during her interview with Mario Lopez for Extra, ‘She is on fire right now, she is on fire, she’s just a ball full of energy,’ (Daily Mail Reporter) and I agree. Miley Cyrus is “on fire” because she is a conversation topic. Besides, this is a good example of the saying in Hollywood: “sex sells” and I would say that is the truth because her targeted audience is a more mature audience perhaps the age range of 18 onwards. In order for Hollywood stars to remain on the spotlight, they have to do something that people will remember, talked about and make references to. For many conservative people, her performance is raunchy and I agree since I am still haunted by the image of her performance and I am certain I am not the only one. However, analyze her action and one will have to admit that this is one smart publicity stunt whether planned or not by her PR team. I just want to clarify one thing: I am not a fan of Miley Cyrus though her songs are not completely bad. I also do not agree with her current actions, including her VMAs performance, but I cannot deny that Miley Cyrus is currently hot on the market because she is the center of attention to the point that MTV is going to release a documentary about her.
